Wally Spero looked up from the drudgery of his factory job to contemplate one of the bleakest places in America - the strip-mined spoil banks of southern Ohio - and saw in them a vision of Eden. In this fable he used an ancient bulldozer to carve a jewel of a farm. He dug ponds from raw subsoil and smoothed hillsides to plant trees where only weeds had grown. Others joined him and the region's farms, people, and towns were reborn. This was his contribution to environmental restoration, and should encourage all to do what they can to follow his lead.
