New York / Helsinki: Reynal & Hitchcock / Otava, 1946. Appealing children's book describing various animals, written & illustrated by Saarinen, better-known for her sculpture, which also often depicted animals. Includes both the American edition in English, and a Finnish edition, INSCRIBED by Saarinen. American Swann met Finn Eero Saarinen at Cranbook, where she was a student and he the son of teacher Eliel. The American edition bears the bookplate of art adminstrator & artist couple Allan & Marjorie [Kreilik] McNab, with Kreilick's seal on the title page; the Finnish edition is inscribed: "For Caroline with fondest wishes & Bon Voyage to Yale! Thanks for so much - [signature]". Hardcovers, as pictured; the American book with its jacket; the Finnish book dated (on the back cover) 1956, no jacket, possibly as issued - its rear cover has a Finnish version of part of the American edition's flap text. General wear & light foxing to books, tanning to pages, minor stains; jacket creased & chipped. Text clean; [34] pages, illustrated in black, green, & red. . Inscribed by the Author. First Edition. Hard Cover. Good/Good. Illus. by Lily Swann Saarinen. 10½ " by 8".
