The first edition of this interesting novel, discussing divorce in the early twentieth century. Part of Arnold Bennett's Five Towns novels, it is a powerful read with a strong social message. It discusses divorce at the time, with detailed court proceedings, and comments on the way the act of divorce was seen and treated. Arnold Bennett was a prolific English author, best known for his novel writing. His Five Towns novels are set in a fictionalised version of the Potteries. He believed was that literature should be available to all ordinary people, and did not agree with the literary élite, belief that is reflected in his engaging and smooth writing.
