About This Item
London: Hutchison, [1940].. xxiv,256,40pp. Small octavo. Rose cloth, stamped in black. Uniform modest tanning to textblock, otherwise near fine in very good, dust jacket with slight dust-soiling to rear panel and some mild fraying at the extremities. First British edition of the future President's first trade book. Foreword by Henry Luce. This was Kennedy's senior thesis at Harvard, and examines the basis of England's decision to resist Hitler when it did. The dust jacket advertises the fact that Kennedy's father was then Ambassador for the US to the Court of St. James. The substantial terminal publisher's catalogue is dated 'Fall 1940'. Published in the same year as the first US edition and significantly more uncommon than that edition.
Synopsis
Why England Slept is the published version of a thesis written by John F. Kennedy while in his senior year at Harvard College. Its title was an allusion to Winston Churchill's 1938 book While England Slept, which also examined the buildup of German power.
