About This Item
Nuremberg, Zieger, 1705. With engraved frontispiece and c. 100 woodcuts in the text, partly full-page. (4) leaves, 1357 pp., (28) leaves index. Thick Sm.-4to. Contemporary vellum. Nuremberg, Zieger, 1705. Johann Kunckel (1630/38-1703) was the son of an alchemist at the court of Duke Friedrich of Holstein, acted as his father's assistant and worked for pharmacists and glassmakers, but received no university training. He is considered to be the discoverer of phosphor. Kunckel was appointed director of the alchemical laboratory of Friedrich Wilhelm of Brandenburg on the Pfaueninsel (Peacock Island) in Berlin, where he made alchemy experiments and introduced glass technology to Germany. He was also the inventor of genuine ruby glass. In 1698 he became minister of the mines in Sweden, and also became member of the Leopoldina Academy. Kunckel is a more important figure in the history of chemistry than seems generally realised (Duven). The present work is a detailed compendium of engineering, chemistry, metallurgy and their application of the arts and crafts. Part 1: "Die wahre Erkäntnus der Ertzen und Metallen" is mainly about fire arts, mineralogy and the parting of gold and silver. Part 2: "Die schöne Form-Kunst, Bereitung guter Feuer-beständiger Haffner-Geschirr" deals mostly with china, tile stoves, and glass-making. Part 3: "Allerhand schöne Glas-Künste" contains mostly detailed recipes on the preparation and application of paint. Part 4: "Von denen natürlichen Edelgesteinen" is about gemstones, pearls, and coral. Part 5: "Chymische Secreta und Medicinalia" deals with the production of chemical substances not only for medical use, but also embalming. The woodcuts show a.o., vessels, different instruments and equipment, including a lathe, microscopes, instruments for geodesy. This illustrates Kunckel's experiments on calcination, gilding and painting glass, glazing pottery, making and painting faience in the Dutch style, and experiments on casting models of plants from silver, coloring gypsum, marbling paper, making plastic wood, etc. A second vol., which is no present here appeared in 1707 and deals only with color, painting, gilding, stones, etc. and is found separately catalogued in some libraries.- Due to paper quality very lightly browned, otherwise fine. - VD18 80165869-001; Dünnhaupt (2nd ed.) IV, p. 2476, 9.2 (part 2: not seen); Sinkankas 3301 (only vol. 1); Peters, Hermann. Kunckels Verdienste um die Chemie. In: "Archiv für die Geschichte der Naturwissenschaften und der Technik", 4 (1912), pp. 178-214; Brüning 3186; Kuhnert, Lothar. Die Erfindung der Nanotechnologie in Berlin; see Mortimer Cascoigne, p. 419; cf. Darmstaedter 1679,1681,1700; not in Caillet, Ferguson, Ackermann, Rosenthal or Duveen.
