About This Item

MP3 Audio CD. Live Through the Rise, Struggles and Victories of William the Conqueror

William the Conqueror is one of the most notable figures in British history. Leader of the Normand army at the battle of Hastings in 1066, and the first Norman King of England, he reigned for more than 20 long years, before his death in 1087. Jacob Abbott, a prolific author of the early and mid-19th century is one of the first who have written an extensive, well-researched text about William the Conqueror, managing to present a detailed account of his Viking roots, early beginnings, rise to power, and his years as the King of England.

Abbott begins with a short introduction of William's father, the Duke Robert of Normandy, as well as his Viking ancestors. William was named by Duke Robert as an illegitimate heir, however, he quickly went on to prove himself as a remarkable leader and warrior. He managed to fend off many of his relatives, who have made a claim for the Normand throne, later challenging even the King of France.

The account of William the Conqueror's life, written quite masterfully and in great detail by Abbott also deals with the intrigue behind how William was named heir to the throne of England by his cousin, Saxon King Edward. Later on, we are guided through William's bold move of crossing the English Channel, and managing to initialize the conquering of England. After the Battle of Hastings, he became the first Normand King of England, and went on to lead the country for 21 years.

Abbott's account of the life of William the Conqueror is short but to the point, and including many important details that you might not find too easily in mainstream history books ? as is the case with many of Abbott's other historical writings.

William the Conqueror is a well-researched and extremely well-written biographical work that has withstood the test of time, remaining quite current and acclaimed among historians for nearly two centuries.
