About This Item

San Francisco: The Arion Press, 1996. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. This is copy 185 of 250 signed by Gore Vidal. The author's first book, a taughtly written story of the twenty-man crew aboard a small army supply ship serving in the Aleutian Islands during the final months of World War II, and their encounter with a fierce storm that blows apart the military decorum that had held their personal hostilities in check. Written by Vidal when he was a 19-year-old soldier posted to Alaska, the novel was met with critical praise that secured Vidal a place among the generation of writers that came of age during World War II, which includes Joseph Heller, Norman Mailer, and Kurt Vonnegut. This fine press edition was issued on the fiftieth anniversary of the novel's first publication in 1946 and includes a new introduction by the author. Prospectus laid in. Quarto: x, 119 p. with three tipped-in photographs and illustrated endpapers. Printed on German mouldmade Schiller paper and bound in full blue cloth, with a printed paper spine label. A fine copy in a fine dust jacket. Signed by Author.
