About This Item
New York: John Day, (1931). First edition. Hardcover. Fine in about very good jacket with moderate toning to jacket spine, light edgewear . 280 pp., octavo, original tan cloth with title and rules in red, pictorial jacket.
Inscribed by Robert Andrews to fellow author Dan Steele: "For Dan Steele with the sincere hope of Robert Andrews that Dan Steele will like Robert Andrews' book as well as Robert Andrews is sure he will like Dan Steele's book." Robert Hardy Andrews (1903-1976) was a successful writer of fiction, screenplays and adaptations. His credits include "The Hairy Ape" (1944) adapted from Eugene O'Neill's play; the story adaptation of Conan Doyle's "His Last Bow" for the 1942 film "Sherlock Holmes and the Voice of Terror" starring Basil Rathbone; the screenplay for the 1948 film "Man from Colorado" starring Glenn Ford and William Holden. The 1932 film version of "Windfall" was titled "If I Had a Million." This story of a millionaire bequeathing $10 million dollars to 10 random people - a million each - was likely heady stuff in the depths of the great depression. The movie utilized a different director for each of the 10 separate vignettes, and the large cast included George Raft, Gary Cooper, WC Fields, Charles Laughton, et al.
