Ludwig Kempe's bookplate to front pastedown. Binding square and tight, text clean and bright.. 8vo. 6.5 x 9.25 in. 414 pp. A handsome German edition of the first work of the mystical Benedictine Abbess Hildegard von Bingen's visionary theology, SCIVIAS ('sci vias Domini', i.e. 'know the ways of the Lord'), illustrated with 35 beautiful plates. Bright orange cloth, blocked in black & gilt on spine, ornamented in gilt on upper cover; with pictorial dust jacket. Translated into German and edited by Maura Böckeler, choirwoman of the Benedictine Abbey St. Hildegard zu Eibingen. This copy belonged to Dr. Ludwig Kempe, German-American neurosurgeon, ornithologist, and illustrator, retired colonel in the U.S. Army, asst. chief of neurosurgery at Walter Reed, etc. etc. According to the original text of the illuminated Rupertsberg Codex, illustrated thus with 35 plates in gold & silver etc. A handsome publication, uncommon in jacket.
