The First UK printing published by Heinemann, London in 1929. The BOOK is in Very Good+ condition with original black cloth with blind-stamped border and publisher's device to upper and lower board respectively. Mild rubbing to the corners and the lower rear edge. Small nicks at the spine tips. The spine is lettered in gilt. Mild ghosting of the spine. The upper text block is a little dusty and is very lightly toned. The binding remains tight although there is some early cracking with a little exposure of the webbing to the lower half of the rear spine hinge internally. The WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good+ condition. Mild edge wear with a little loss at the spine ends. Some splitting along the spine folds. A horizontal closed tear to the spine has been professionally repaired with Japanese tissue paper to the verso. The wrapper is the correct First Issue with the price of '7/6 net' to the spine and the Oliver Onions 'Painted Face' review to the rear flap (Wobbe A2a). The wrapper is protected in a removable Brodart archival cover. The book has been signed (without dedication) by the author to the front blank end paper. There are some pencilled notes in an unknown hand to the upper half of the rear blank end paper critiquing the novel. A tale of betrayal among smugglers - the author's first novel, preceded only by a book of poems entitled 'Babbling April'. The title for the book was taken from Sir Thomas Browne's (1605-1682) 'There's another man within me that's angry with me'. The film adaptation of the book, starring Michael Redgrave & Richard Attenborough, was made in 1947. One of the scarcest of Greene's titles to find signed. At the time of listing the only available copy on the market with such attributes. More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.
