About This Item
Pamphlet 8vo, disbound, illustrated with eight plates, 106 pp. Some foxing and aging, terminal leaf torn. Sickles (1825-1914) attended the University of the City of New York, was admitted to the bar in 1846, and married Theresa Bagioli in 1853. He was elected to Congress in 1857, but two years later on February 27, 1859, he shot and killed Philip Barton Key, the son of Francis Scott Key, for having an affair with his wife. He was acquitted, using for the first time, temporary insanity as a defense. During the Civil War he rose to major general, and lost a leg at Gettysburg. He eventually became ambassador to Spain, and in 1852 obtained Central Park for New York City. McDade 871. DAB Vol. IX.
