About This Item
London & New York: Walter Scott & Charles Scribner's Sons, 1897. This is the fourth book by Havelock Ellis (1859-1939), who would next write (with John Addington Symonds) the first objective medical work on homosexuality. An uncommon to scarce title, except in reprint or subsequent revisions. Originally published in 1894; this is a Near Fine copy of the Second Edition, characterized as from "The Contemporary Science Series." Ellis was a pioneer in the study of human sexuality, with a somewhat diminished reputation due to his support for the now-disgraced "science" of eugenics. Maroon cloth binding, ruled, and with gilt lettering on the front cover and spine. Clean text; 409 pages, with two indices and 12 pages of publisher adverts in the rear. There is very mild rub to the corners and the head and foot of the spine, else a Fine copy. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Second Edition.. Hard Cover. Near Fine/No Jacket.
