About This Item

New York: The Century Co, 1911. First edition. Hardcover. Near Very Good. 8vo. [6], vii-x, [2], 3-337, [3] pp. Maroon cloth with gold lettering on the front board and spine, a gold inset illustration on the front board of Agrippina Mecer Manici's bust on a coin; top edge gilt. Illustrated with a frontispiece and with forty-five full-page black and white illustrations, drawings of scenes from Ancient Rome. Ferrero's book explores the history of women in Rome: their legal rights, their role in public society, marriage customs, and women in Roman religion. The book often contrasts Roman women to Greek women, and explores how in some ways, Rome was progressive in how it treated its female citizens. A Near Very Good book with the binding slightly shaken but holding, the boards show minor rubbing; a contemoprary name on the free front endpaper.
