New York: James A. McCann Company, 1922. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Lawson, Robert. First printing, folio size, 78 pp. The story of a trip to "Looking Glass Land" by "Prince Toofat" and "Himself", with wonderful illustrations by Robert Lawson (1892-1957). This was Lawson's first published book, he would later win both the Caldecott Medal (1941, "They Were Strong and Good") and Newbery Medal (1945, "Rabbit Hill").
___DESCRIPTION: Bound in full grey cloth over boards, dark grey illustration stamped on the front board, the top portion of the illustration enclosing the title in gilt debossed, patterned endpapers, the half-title with the front board illustration in light green with black lettering, colour frontis one of six colour plates bound in throught, the book is richly decorated with pale green line drawn borders on every text page, and pictorial headpieces and rubricated initials at the opening of each chapter, both in black; folio size (12 1/8" by 10 1/2"), pagination: [i-viii] [1-2] 3-70.
___CONDITION: Overall a very good copy; internally near fine with all plates present and rich in colour, mostly clean with just a few light, stray spots, and entirely free of prior owner markings; structually the binding square and strong with solid hinges; externally the boards with some sunning at the spine and the inch or two around both joints, a few spots of soil, some rubbing to the head and tail of the spine, the corners gently bumped and some light discolouration at the fore-edge margins of both boards; the front free endpaper had a triangular tear with small loss (a professional filled this in to match, name available upon request), the plate facing p. 48 with prior repair to the verso to mend a vertical crease (barely visible on the recto).
