About This Item

New York, NY: Puffin Books, 2000. 1st Edition . Soft cover. New/None as Issued. Quentin Blake (Cover Art). Text/NEW & Bright. Puffin 2000, First Edition, 10th Printing. Softcover/NF w/trace edge rubs. 7 short stories of facts & fiction by Norwegian-British novelist, poet, screenwriter & ace fighter pilot Roald Dahl (1916 - 1990). Written over time, the last two are autobiographical. Engaging reads for 12 years & up, and, the young-at-heart. Lead story is of wealthy gambler Henry Sugar who, in India, comes across medical records of a patient (now deceased), known as "The Man Who Sees Without Using His Eyes"; indeed he proves he still could see, even though doctors had medically sealed his eyes shut, kept his head bandaged, and, still able to earn a living in a circus by demonstrating his skills --- he said, as a student of Yogi Hadaawar, he learnt to see through thin matter like paper and even solid wooden doors after first running fingers/hands over the obstacle. Henry Sugar acquires the art and could see the next card to be dealt at casinos --- constant wins at roulette wheels & blackjack tables become meaningless and generates such revulsion to money that he throws hand fulls of 20 pound notes off his London balcony! Not a solution! So many people fought for the bills that a near riot ensued. What does Henry Sugar do? 225 pgs, the stories are: 1, The Boy Who Talked with Animals; 2, The Hitchhiker; 3, The Mildenhall Treasure; 4, The Swan; 5, The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar; 6, Lucky Break: How I Became a Writer; and 7, A Piece of Cake: First Story - 1942.
