London: Printed for the Proprietors,, 1783. An early collected edition of the author's works, published only 15 years after his death, in the attractive contemporary binding. Seven volumes, duodecimo (161 x 97 mm). Contemporary tree calf, red and black spine labels, spines richly decorated in gilt, board edges gilt. Engraved title page to each volume, 3 engraved frontispieces, a couple of diagrams to the text. Contemporary ownership signature to front pastedowns. A few small scuff marks to covers, short splits to joints but holding, a little rubbing to extremities, minor wear to a few tips, top edges dusty, some inner hinges partially split, others strengthened with paper, endpapers lightly browned by turn-ins, light foxing to contents, many pages still bright. A very good set.

A finely bound set of an early edition of Sterne's collected works, beautifully illustrated, combining suites of plates by two of the most celebrated English book illustrators of the day, Thomas Stothard and John Thurston. Sterne's portrait, in volume I, is after a famous design by Sir Joshua Reynolds. Stothard's illustrations were first published together in the 10-volume edition of 1798 by Cadell & Davies; his marbled leaf is included here in volume I. Stothard (1755-1834) is remembered as "probably the most prolific book illustrator of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries" (ODNB). John Thurston's (1774–1822) illustrations first appeared in 1802 (here dated 1803), in another edition of Sterne's complete works by the same publishers. Finely bound by Morrell of London in brown speckled half calf, titles in gilt to red morocco spine labels, spines richly gilt, marbled boards and endpapers, all edges yellow. Engraved portrait frontispiece of Sterne by Sherwin, and 9 engraved plates after Hogarth, Rooker, Tomkins, and others. Neat ink ownership inscription "J. Woodhead, presented by the Honorable F. Fitzroy, 1797" washed from title pages. Short splits to front joints of vols. 1 and 8, corners a trifle rubbed, the bindings otherwise sound and unfaded, occasional light foxing to endpapers, else internally fresh and clean; a handsome set.
