About This Item

London: S. Briscoe, 1722. Two volumes, octavo, frontispiece portrait; blue morocco gilt, by Smith.

First edition thus: expanded from an edition of 1702, it has been conjectured (probably unsubstantially) that this edition was prepared by Defoe. Dashing, profligate and witty, Sedley was a favourite of Charles II. He 'gained a deserved reputation ... for a certain poetic gift' (Brittanica).
