Boston: Little, Brown and Company,. Good+ with no dust jacket. 1860. 1st Illustrated 12th. Cloth. 8vo; Original imprinted brown cloth . Leaves are tight and solid. Spine has lightened a bit. Largely consists of political works. Hinges solid. An American lawyer and statesman who represented New Hampshire and Massachusetts in the U. S. Congress and served as the 14th and 19th U. S. Secretary of State under Presidents William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, and Millard Fillmore. Webster eloquently defended the powers of the federal government as opposed to the alleged rights of the states. Today, he's best remembered as the greatest public speaker of his time, a founder of the Whig Party, and for his controversial role in the 1850 compromise that led to fugitive slave laws and the Whig Party's death. .
