O. Henry's short stories were known for their wit and their surprise endings. Many of his stories take place in early 20th century New York City which he referred to as "Bagdad-on-the-Subway". Many will be familiar with one of his most famous tales, "The Gift of the Magi" (in "The Four Million") which has been re-worked, parodied, and otherwise re-told countless times since it was written. O. Henry coined the term "banana republic" in his collection "Cabbages and Kings." In "The Caballero's Way" ("Heart of the West") he introduces one of his most famous characters, The Cisco Kid. The prestigious O. Henry Award is given to authors of outstanding short stories.
