About This Item
London, Nd(1921): Priv. Print. For The Navarre Society Limited. Octavo. Vol. I, 474 pages, Vol. II, 462 pages. illustrated by W. Heath Robinson, 1872-1944 . Gargantua and Pantagruel is a satire ridiculing the educational and religious establishment of his day. W. Heath Robinson had already become one of the finest illustrators of books including his own Bill the Minder (1912), A Midsummer Night's Dream (1914) and this fine edition of Rabelais (1921). The English translation was begun by Sir Thomas Urquart and finished by Pierre Motteau. They attempted to be delicate but besides sex, Rabelais often deals with the problems of the removal of bodies wastes. He states that excrement and Piss (or the lack thereof) keep the Physician with patients. The Typography and printing of this book was extraordinary. One of the finest productions of the Navarre Society bound in three-quarter red Morocco over salmon cloth, raised bands gilt, title gilt within one compartment, others decoratively stamped in gilt, top edges gilt, one bumped corner otherwise fine.
