Edward Midwinter, London, 1730. The seventh edition carefully corrected. Adorned with a new set of copper plates. Four volumes. Frontispiece to each volume and 22 engraved plates. 8vo (6 5/8 x 4 inches), pages: xx:315; (6):331; (6): 339; & viii:340. Contemporary full mottled tan calf, gilt ornamental rule to sides. Spines with raised bands, darkened. Some light chipping to headbands, some cracking to the joints but very firm.Some browning but overall very good. From the library of Sir Robert Eden Bt. with his armorial bookplate on front pastedowns.Brown's life was as licentious as his writings. Much of his time was spent in a low taven in Gower's Row in the Minories. His knowledge of London was certainly "extensive and peculiar," and his humorous sketches of low life are both entertaining and valuable. The frontispiece of the first volume shows the writer seated on the floor beside a cracked pedestal, his head on his left hand and a laurel wreath under his foot. He writes on a paper "Satyr agt. Wit" while turning to glare angrily at a satyr on the left who holds up a formal portrait of Brown with a label attached reading, "Hic Ille Est"; a figure in classical robes stands on the right and in the air an angel emerges from clouds bearing a scroll inscribed with the title of the book.
