Couvertures rigides, Paper covered boards, paper spine labels, engraved frontispiece in each volume. Bon état. Light wear and light soiling to covers, spines rubbed and one chipped, water stain to spine of one volume and first 2 leaves, contents are age-darkened and with an occasional spot, former owner's name in pencil on front pastedowns. Bindings are all tight, and books appear to be unread.

Printed on laid paper with lots of "f's" for "s's", so appears a late 18th- early 19th century imprint. Rebound in dark green buckram with title stamped in gilt on spine. Top edges gilt. Sabin 91342 notes that this title was originally anonymously published in London in 1770 as the work of a recently deceased literary genius, widely thought to be Laurence Sterne, but later found out to be a literary hoax and the handiwork of Robert Griffith. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 227 pages .

This is a very old (1771) book in what looks like its original leather bindings about a man in the 17th-century Spanish Court and his adventures there.The book's exterior is all leather and has worn areas on all edges and corners, along both verticle edges of the spine, and has some worn and darkened areas on both front and rear covers. On the spine itself, the leather is dried out and cracking and there is a piece at the very bottom that has been worn off of it. The interior book has past owners' names (including one from 1774) as well as other marks on the inside front and rear pages, foxing throughout the book, and light browning on all of the pages. Printed for T Longman in Pater-Noster-Row, [London], 1762, first edition (but see later); 8vo, pp xx, 371 plus page of list of books printed for Thomas Longman; contemporary calf, both boards detached and the one mismatched in design with the other, spine good but with some small loss head and foot so a copy in need of binding repair; bottom corner of front free end paper missing but the book block complete, firm and with good margins although with a little light dust soiling here and there, particularly on the title page where exposed at the foot. Although this is indeed a first edition under this particular title the work was earlier printed 1750 as "The Reflector Representing Human Affairs As They Are and May Be Improved ... " Other than for the title and, hence, title page, this Longman reprint appears to be identical to the earlier edition right down to the list of books at the end.
