Stratford-on-Avon: Shakespeare Head Press, 1906. Ten quarto volumes. This is one of only twelve sets printed on pure vellum with a frontispiece illustration in each volume. It represents a monumental undertaking, which took four years to complete and consumed about 250 sheets for each of the twelve copies printed on vellum. The Shakespeare Head Press was founded by A. H. Bullen, who had the idea of printing the complete works of Shakespeare at Stratford-on-Avon as the result of a dream in which he was presented with a set of Shakespeare's works while visiting the town. This is the first edition of Shakespeare to have been published in Stratford and the first major publication of the Press. Although other Shakespeare Head Press sets printed on vellum regularly appear on the market, this Shakespeare set is very difficult to obtain. Volumes I and II are lacking the silk fore-edge ties, spine lettering a trifle rubbed on volume VI, few volumes with minor wrinkling to spine ends, else a fine copy in creamy full limp vellum stamped in gilt. (Tomkinson p. 229, Ransom p. 9).

The edition is interleaved with loose relics, which the author and photographer have included. Each copy contains an original print of one of the photos from the book and a poem in handwriting. The edition was provided by Mooi Boeken / Pau Groenendijk (www.mooieboeken.nl). Very light rubbing along the hinges of the spine, else near fine.

My Sister Life was written in the summer before the 1917 October Revolution, it was very well received and established him as a genius of Russian poetry. The English translation was done by Mark Rudman. The acclaimed Russian born artist, Yuro Kuyper provides 6 etchings for the publication, printed on Hannemule paper in Paris. The paper used for the text was hand-made by H. M. P. Mill in Connecticut to resemble the sort of stock produced in 1920's Russia, even incorporating bits of Russain newspapers with rags and cotton pulp. The book is in near fine condition, with the only defect being some sunning to the spinea. The slipcase in VG or better, showing some sunning. The book is signed by Yuri Kuyper and this copy is #212 of 250. The original LEC invoice for $4000 laid in; Etching; Folio 13" - 23" tall; Signed by Illustrator .
