First Edition of the author's third published book (but probably second written), a play. 12mo; 141pp; plus 12pp. ads for Ticknor and Fields publications, original blue cloth, blind stamping on covers, gilt-stamping on spine with author, title, and publisher (Ticknor & Co.). Covers a bit scraped along foredge showing white dots, also white spotting on covers and spine tips and joints; stain to top of back cover about 1" x 2", yellow coated endpapers, two contemporary ownership signatures, last page carelessly opened, else very good.
Julia Ward Howe (1819-1910), author of "Battle Hymn of the Republic," started writing poetry and plays at an early age. Her first book, a volume of poetry was published three years prior to this play. Her second book, another volume of poetry was published in the same year as this play. The play, however, was produced in New York at Wallack's Theatre in 1855. BAL notes two editions (no priority); this is Edition A. BAL 9412.
