Miles Joseph Berkeley (1803-1889) ”The founder of British mycology”, systematist with some 6000 species of fungi being credited to him. Berkeley made very important contributions to the field of plant pathology. He composed the account of native British fungi in Sir W. Hooker’s ”British Flora” (1836) and his most important works are ”Introduction to Cryptogamic Botany” (1857), and his ”Outlines of British Fungology” (1860). He also published a large number of articles on mycology.
