About This Item
Linguistic Society of the Philippines. 2007. Trade paperback. Fine.. 237 p. Includes bibliography. . This volume contains twenty-one fully analyzed Yakan texts, collected on the island of Basilan in the Sulu Archipelago, Philippines, between 1971 and 2000 as part of on-going fieldwork. Yakan belongs to the Sama-Badjaw subgroup of the Malayo-Polynesian family of Austronesian languages, spoken by approximately 100, 000 people. The collection contains a selection of Yakan texts representing a variety of genre including traditional narratives, first-person narratives, procedures, explanations, exhortations, epistles, court proceedings, wedding negotiations, poetry, and riddles. Each text is presented in a four-line interlinearized format composed of an orthographic representation, a morpheme analysis, a gloss for each morpheme, and a free translation. A short introduction gives information about the Yakan people, the orthographic representation, presentation of data, and the English translation. Three appendices provide additional details about case marking, pronouns, and deictics.
