Born and brought up in Russia, Zoe Polanska was just 13 wh en she was wrenched at gunpoint from her family by the Nazis who had over-r un the region. Taken to Auschwitz, she survived the monstrous pseudo-medica l experiments of the infamous Dr Josef Mengele. She was transferred to Dach au, from which she managed to escape as the Allies advanced. She found refu ge in Vienna but was forced to escape again to avoid the Gestapo, and got t o Italy. When victory was announced, she joined the exodus back over the Al ps into Austria, where she was taken into one of the camps established for Cossacks and other Russians who had surrendered to the British as prisoners -of-war, having been members of th.
