About This Item
New York: Privately Printed, 1922. This Russian novel about prostitution made a sensation upon its publication, in installments, over a period spanning 1909-1915. Kuprin told one reporter at the time that "Prostitution is a worse evil than war of famine," and wrote to expose it as an ill of Russian society. This privately printed edition is translated from the Russian by Bernard Guilbert Guerney. The private print run was limited to 1225 copies, of which this is No. 1182. It is stamped with this number on the verso of the endpaper facing the title page. Overall a Good copy; some spotting to spine; slight soil and crease to upper rear cover; inside pages are clean, and binding is strong. Includes an introduction by the translator, describing the work and its author, as well as a translator's note about the language, which Guerney says "bristles with neologisms." 406 pages; approx. 6"x8".. Limited. Hardcover. Good/No Jacket.
