About This Item

Taipei: Hansheng Magazine, 1999. Square 8vo, pp. 216; text in Traditional Chinese; 167 pages of color diagrams illustrating dance patterns; printed paper wrappers, fine. Hansheng Magazine is an award-winning project dedicated to highlighting a specific aspect of Chinese cultural arts with each issue. It was founded in 1971 as the English magazine ECHO before shifting towards the Chinese-speaking audience, and is focused on preserving folk art, research, and high production values. The yangko is a form of ritual dance that is meant to harness the earth's natural yang energy and banish the winter weather. The practice of performing the yangko is preserved in Shaanxi province and was registered as an intangible cultural heritage.
