About This Item
Berkeley: Yardbird Publishing Cooperative, 1972. Paperback. Two issues. Small 8vo. Stiff glossy pictorial wrappers. (28pp), 184pp; x, 198pp. Illustrations. Very good. Quite minor binding edgewear only, else tight and internally fine. Two tight and handsome issues of this influential yearly journal of African-American culture and history. In the premiere volume Chester Himes provides the preface ("YARDBIRD READER has thoroughly convinced me that we American blacks are the most inventive, creative and original people in the history of the world") and editor Reed the introduction to this collection of prose and poetry. On the title page of Volume 4, Reed boldly inscribes and signs in black fineline "for Kay / Ishmael Reed" -- "Kay" being Kay Boyle (1902-92), American short story author, novelist, poet and activist. A super pair.
