About This Item

Mayfield Press (H. Thomas), Mayfield, n.d. but c.1902. Printed wrappers, gilt cover-title, 8vo,. 52, [2] pp, ills. From the foreword: " This little book is an attempt to relate the part which the Palace of the Archbishops has played in the history of our country. It claims to be nothing more than a compilation of events collected from sundry works of reference, and as such is not free from peculiarities and incongruities of style. In the majority of cases the words of the documents or authors are quoted verbatim and so far only as they concern our story." Contents: I. Foundation and Early History; II. Division of the County into Parishes; III. Extracts from Archiepiscopal Registers; IV. Alienation, Spoliation and Subsequent Possessors of the Palace and Estate; V. Restorations and Recent Additions; VI. Description of the Ruins of the Palace as they appeared in the early part of the 19th Century; VII. Relics and Curios Preserved at Mavfield; VIII. Royal Visits of later date to Mayfield Palace. Name on title-page, wrappers slightly sunned, rear wrapper a little marked, othewise Very Good.
