Very good. - Square 8vo, navy blue cloth (bottom edges of covers slightly faded) titled in silver with vignette of whales stamped in blind on front cover, in dw (darkened & chipped; lightly soiled). viii, [ii], 213 & [1] pp. (owner's blind stamp on half-title). Illustrations in dark blue & white by Leonard Everett Fisher. Very good in good dw. <p>First edition.<p>The author, a biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and a world authority on marine animals, writes in his preface: "This story of a sperm whale is fiction based on fact. Some of the human characters that appear in it are real, if disguised, others are not real, though they could be....When I depart from the story to give information about the study of whales, about whaling, past and present, about conservation, and other related matters, this information is printed in different type from that used for the story."
