New York: Scribner's, 1938. First Edition, First Printing. Hardcover. Good/Good. Octavo. 6 x 8.5 in. 428 pp. Good in original cloth boards with green, stamped titling and a cover illustration, and a good illustrated dust jacket that has slight wear from past reading, but remains whole, intact, and otherwise bright. First edition of Rawlings's fourth book, containing Scribner's standard "A" on the copyright page, and periodic illustrations by Edward Shenton. The spine has some staining on the spine, possibly from sunning, but remains tight. The covers are crisp, and the pages contain only faint age-related toning. Previous owners placed a book plate on the interior cover and a circular pressed stamp on the FFEP.
Synopsis
The Yearling is a 1938 novel written by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. It won the Pulitzer Prize for the Novel in 1939. Rawlings's editor was Maxwell Perkins, who also worked with F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, and other literary luminaries. She had submitted several projects to Perkins for his review, and he rejected them all. He instructed her to write about what she knew from her own life, and the result of her taking his advice was The Yearling.
