About This Item
San Francisco: H.S. Crocker & Co., [1890]. First edition. Folio with thirteen full page chromolithographs of Yosemite and vicinity. Each (but one; as issued)with a printed tissue guard bearing a poem by Harry Dix. With artwork by H.W. Hansen and Carll Dahlgren. Publisher's half olive suede over white boards with gilt vignette and lettering. Suede a bit mottled, some light foxing to boards and a few tissue guards but overall a very good copy.Eleven of these are from watercolors by H[erman] W[endelborg] Hansen and two are from oil sketches by Carl Dahlgren. H. W. Hansen has been referred to as the "Frederick Remington of the West Coast." He was a contemporary and friend of William Keith and Maynard Dixon. Two of the chromolithographs are by Carl Dahlgren who was an illustrator for the Californian Magazine as well as a prominent landscape painter. This was issued as part of a promotion to establish Yosemite as a tourist destination and national park. Many copies have been disbound in order to sell individual plates.Curry & Kruska 88. Cowan, p. 699.
