About This Item

The New English Library, London., 1966. Third edition of a book originally published under a pseudonym in Paris in 1954, then by Heinemann, London, in 1961. Octavo. 160 pages. Wrappers. The author's first serious novel. Maurice Girodias published it under his Olympia Press imprint among the pornographic titles Trocchi was producing for him under the name Frances Lengel (White Thighs, School for Sin, etc). This New Englsh Library edition is a continuation of Girodias's involvement, being no. 109 in his Traveller's Companion series. The novel was filmed in 2003 with Ewan McGregor in the title role.Presentation copy from the author, inscribed by him inside the front cover: ''For Dr Aylett with best wishes - Alexander Trocchi''.A bit of rubbing to edges of covers. Very good. Books inscribed by Trocchi are quite elusive.

Synopsis

Young Adam is a 1957 novel by Alexander Trocchi about a young man working on the river barges of Glasgow. It tells the story of Joe, a young man working on the canals between Glasgow and Edinburgh who discovers a body of a young woman floating in the canal. The novel focuses on the relationship between Joe and his companions on the barge - a husband and wife - and it becomes clearer as the novel progresses that Joe is connected to the corpse.
