About This Item

Philadelphia/New York: J.B. Lippincott Company. Very Good+ in Very Good dj. (c.1956). First Edition. Hardcover. [slight deterioration to cloth at spine ends, otherwise a good sound copy; jacket a bit edgeworn and age-toned, minor paper loss at top of spine, tiny tears at a couple of corners, a bit of surface insect-nibbling visible on rear panel]. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the 2nd front endpaper -- the inscribee being James Galanos, one of the eight up-and-coming stars of the 1950s fashion world who are profiled in the book. In fact, Galanos (1924-2016) would certainly rank as the most successful of the group, with a clilent list that included Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe, Jackie Kennedy, Grace Kelly, Diana Ross, Rosalind Russell, Marlene Dietrich, Judy Garland, and numerous others. Long revered within the fashion world, he achieved perhaps the peak of his fame in the 1980s when he became the favored designer for First Lady Nancy Reagan. Others featured here who went on to make substantial names for themselves are: the Frankfurt sisters of Dallas (who founded a major maternity-wear franchise); Helen Lee (a noted designer of children's clothing); and Bonnie Cashin (a sportswear pioneer who had also been a Hollywood costume designer). The others are: Anne Fogarty; Jeanne Campbell; John Moore; Lorraine and Bard Budny. Signed by Author .
