About This Item
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons. Near Fine in Very Good+ dj. (c.1960). First Edition. Hardcover. [light shelfwear, a bit of age-toning to edges of text block; jacket shows a little wear along top and bottom edges, small tear at top rear hinge]. INSCRIBED ("fOR _____ & _____ -- / In warm friendship" and SIGNED and DATED by the author on the ffep (the date is 12/5/59, about six weeks before its official publication date). "A very contemporary story of New York and the theatre world," which supposedly "catches the Broadway and hipster societies in a way both economical and graphic." (My Random Authentic Dialogue Detector uncovered the following lines: "Man, you're crazy." and "Don't be a nut." On the same page, no less.) This was the author's first novel, but he was no flash in the pan: he went on to publish eight more novels. His New York Times obituary (an online, paid obituary, it should be noted) claimed that "his work was regularly optioned by Hollywood studios, and he was hired to write dialogue for many films, including Harper (1966), starring Paul Newman," but my research suggests that any such work remained uncredited.
