About This Item

London: Jonathan Cape, 1960. First Edition. Presentation copy, signed and inscribed by the author Ian Fleming to William Plomer, the poet and author who discovered Ian Fleming as an author. Plomer as a reader and literary adviser at publisher Jonathan Cape, convinced Cape to publish Casino Royale. Plomer served as editor and advisor on the James Bond books, and gave the address at Flemings memorial service. Inscribed on the front free endpaper: “To Wm, It was your ayes that shared all this! Affec[tionally], Ian.” Ian Fleming dedicated the James Bond novel Goldfinger to Plomer. Fine fresh copy in an about fine dust jacket with the barest hint of use and a faint trace of fading to the spine. Enclosed in a custom clamshell box with gilt-stamping to the spine. William Plomer (1903 - 1973) was a British and South African author and literary editor whose first novel Turbott Wolfe (1925) became famous in the Union of South Africa with its interracial love story. For Your Eyes Only was made into a film in 1981 and starred Roger Moore as James Bond, with Carole Bouquet and Topol. It received an Oscar and an Golden Globe nomination for Best Music, Original Song ‘For Your Eyes Only’, Music by Bill Conti and Lyrics by Michael Leeson.
