About This Item

London: The Garden Book Club, 1952. Cloth. Very Good Indeed/Very Good. 8" by 5". None . An early printing of Vita Sackville-West's popular gardening work, 'In Your Garden.' An early printing of Vita Sackville-West's popular gardening volume, comprised of the columns which originally appeared in the Observer from 1946. The 'Garden Book Club' edition of 1952, the first book edition was published in 1951, both uncommon editions. Vita's voice and passion for gardens and nature made her writings very popular: personal and informal but offering practical advice at the same time, it attracted both amateur and expert gardeners.Included in this charming book is a reprint of her 1937 book Some Flowers.Vita Sackville-West is known not only for her successful writing career, but also for her creation of the gardens at Sissinghurst Castle together with her husband Harold Nicolson. With the price-clipped dust wrapper. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally very smart with only minor shelf wear and a slight bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. There is a damp mark to the front board, slightly affecting the spine. With a faint ownership signature on the front pastedown, dated 1953. The dust wrapper is price clipped and very smart with some shelf wear and a closed tear horizontally to the spine. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are age toned and slightly browned, as usual. Very Good Indeed

Synopsis

From 1946, the poet and novelist Vita Sackville-West wrote a gardening column in the Observer. The columns were later collected into a set of books published between 1951 and 1958. Vita's extensive gardening knowledge, her intense passion for her subject, and her lively literary flair make these classics of garden writing essential for any serious gardener's bookshelf.
