About This Item

New York: Miles McEnery Gallery, 2023. Hardcover. VG (spine ends bumped w/ creasing or rubbing. corners bumped & creased). multi-color pictorial boards w/ reflective white printing. 47 w/ color plates throughout. Exhibition held March 16-April 22, 2023. "Yunhee Min's painting process is predominantly horizontal. Laid across the ground of her studio, her linen canvases come alive with her chosen medium of low-viscosity acrylic paints. She pours, sponges, brushes, and rolls pigments across the surface in various stages. Each gestural form mimics the bodily movement Min expresses; cascading sponge marks reflect the varying weight of her hand and vertical swaths record her use of a paint roller, all extending the artist's own physical reach. The dynamic compositions become further animated by her choices in each palette. Employing vibrant hues, the inorganic colors clash and ease into each other at once. Appearing unnatural at first glance, the contrasts soften and blend out to create an enticing environment of washes that welcomes the viewer in. The resulting body of work holds an undeniably choreographic quality, with each individual mark integrated into the whole. As Nick Herman synthesizes in the essay, "In Min's New Paintings, recording [her] animating principle produces a liberating effect, inspiring not only a vocabulary of relationality but of mystery and the unexpected... It is this humming attunement that governs the paintings on display, each of which can be understood as containing this insistent liquid desire."--Publisher.
