About This Item

[Edo? 1820-30's, N.p.]. Yellow stiff wrappers, title slip, a long pocket walking map & guide to all of Japan, 17.3 x 6.22 meters, acordion folded to 7.2 x 17.3 cm., color woodblock printed, [88] pages in all, nice, above average example. . *** **** *** . . ALL JAPAN ILLUSTRATED WALKING GUIDE & TRAVEL MAP . . . AN UNUSUAL & COMPLETE MAP OF JAPAN . . . COVERS ALL OF JAPAN FROM NORTH TO SOUTH . *** . An unusual complete walking map from Matsumae, Hokkaido down through all of Japan along the Tokaido [Eastern Highway], passing all of the Joka [castle towns] and other small towns, villages & Mura down to Kyushu and Nagasaki. . Passing through all of the major cities, showing the castles, walking roads, paths and notable sights, temples, shrines, castles, famous places, landmarks, stunning scenery and all points of interest. . Ryokan [Japanese inns], tea houses, restaurants, rest stops, souvenir shops, and other places of interest to travelers on "Shanks' Mare" [i.e. on foot]. . This folded scroll-type map begins from right and progressing to the left in typical Japanese style. Beginning at Hokkaido and passing along through Honshu, the Inland Sea, Shikoku, down to Shimonoseki and across the straights to Kyushu. . This map was issued in an unusual format that is to say the complete walking map from Japan's most northern island to its most southern island. A complete map of Japan ! . While most travelers walked from Tokyo to Kyoto along the famous Tokaido highway, this map is unusual in that it would be bought by a traveler who attempted to walk from the north to the southern island, taking months if not years. . The map is designed to give the walker a guide to each and every step of the way along the road, advising the traveler of where to eat, stay and rest. . These roads were commonly closed at sundown by the local fiefdom until sunrise. Therefore all travelers had to find an overnight inn to stay, rest and eat before the next days continuation of the journey. . * Revised by TEIEI DOH Shujin. [Master Teiei Doh] . *** DO SHU: TRAVELLING HAND MAPS: This is kind of map was commonly carried in the Kimono sleeve as a guide to the road, readily available to follow along the path. It was an essential travel item, giving the traveler insights to where he is, what to expect on the next leg of his journey. Without a map of this kind the traveler had no idea of what city or town was next on the horizon, which sights and famous products to partake of. . Key to the symbols used on the map. With Kyoto guide section. Directional symbols , names of important towns in red highlight. . *** With comprehensive chronological tables, lucky & unlucky days. With a sundial, simply put a small stick on the center of the sundial and tell the time ! . *** CONDITION: . This map is bound in the original publisher's yellow stiff covers, with title slip. . This kind of map was constantly being open, refolded [easily misfolded] and commonly conveniently stored in the Kimono sleeve. It has some of the typical and usual minor soil, a few neat mends here and there, signs of having been used & read. A few misfolded pages, nevertheless complete as issued, by and large a very good example. . Remarkably in much better condition than others we have seen during our 55 years tenure. . The image, impression & color are strong. There are no tears, worm holes or marks or stains. . *** Color photos are posted to our website. . *** REFERENCES: Though we could not find the exact map in our references we cite the typical cartographic resources which can show similar examples. . * KOBE CITY MUSEUM. [KOBE SHI RITSU HAKUBUTSU KAN]. AKIOKA KO CHIZU KOLEKUSHYON MEI HIN TEN: EXHIBITION OF THE AKIOKA COLLECTION OF FAMOUS OLD MAPS. * NANBA, Matsutaro. ed. et al.
