Tehran: Bank Melli, 1970. Truly unique, a VG- copy written by the famed heart surgeon Christian Barnard and looking at the Zour Khaneh (House of Strength), an ancient Persian martial arts discipline dating back to before the reign of Ardeshir Babakan (2nd century AD). While there is apparently some disagreement over whether Barnard actually co-authored the title, the fact remains that this 174pp. book is an uncommon find. My research turned up 8 copies in libraries around the world. This copy is VG-, with slight edgewear and a few small creases to the cover. Illus. with dozens of B&W photos showing athletes performing the various martial art forms before visiting royalty, along with descriptions of the various disciplines, their history and development and a look at their significance in the country's history. Pages clean, binding sound, ornately decorated cover is clean and bright. Also includes an invitation from the President of Bank Melli Iran and his wife, given on April 28 1971, when the former owner was (presumably) given this book. A most unusual historical and cultural reference work.. Trade Paperback. VG-/No Jacket (As Issued).

xvi+469 pages with appendix and bibliography. Royal octavo (9" x 6") bound in original publisher's brown cloth with gilt lettering to spine in original pictorial jacket. First editionFocusing on the fate of the natives under Spanish rule, the author traces in graphic detail the rupturing of Indian traditions and the fate that befell the Indian people. While demonstrating the excesses of the conquistadors and unscrupulous crown officials, he also emphasizes that Central America was the scene of the first attempt to apply the famous New Laws. Although that legislation was not fully implemented, the reformist judge Alonso Lopez de Cerrato made significant improvements in labor conditions, in the face of furious opposition from the Spanish settlers. Aside from it discussion of labor practices, this account deals with population figures and the extent of the slave trade, and corrects a number of errors in traditional sources. In addition, Spanish Indian policy, particularly at the local level, is examined… Read More

His contributions to anthropological theory and practice still challenge us; in more than 300 publications, his writings encompass a wide diversity of topics, including acculturation, long-term fieldwork, peasant economies, pottery making, public health, social structure, symbolic systems, technological change, theories of illness and wellness, humoral medicine in Latin America, and worldview.
