About This Item
Berlin: Gebrunder Borntraeger, 1872. First printing. Wraps. Very Good. Wilamowitz Famous Attack on Nietzsches Birth of TragedyWILAMOWITZ-MÖLLENDORFF, Ulrich von, Zukunftphilologie! (Future-Philology) Gebrunder Borntraeger, Berlin, 1872. Cover + 1 leaf + TP + [5]-32 + cover, Octavo. First Edition.Wilamowitz famously vicious attack on Nietzsches The Birth of Tragedy. The pamphlet is more famous for the stridency of the polemic than it is for the arguments presented. Even more interesting is the fact that this is the first writing published by the young Wilamowitz (1848-1931), who subsequently went on to become the foremost classical scholar of his generation, commanding the respect and admiration of the entire European community of philologists. It is unknown how many copies of this pamphlet were printed, but they were likely very few. As Wilamowitz biographer, William M. Calder III, admits: I do not know nor do I think that there is any possibility of learning how many copies of Zukunfsphilologie were published. The printing was more or less private and paid for by Wilamowitz. (Schaberg, The Nietzsche Canon, University of Chicago Press, 1995, p. 27, fn)CONDITION: Very good or better in the original wrappers with mild foxing. Minor edge wear to wrappers and a name stamped to upper right corner of title page.
