About This Item
(Johannesburg: Witwatersrand University Press, 1963). Revised edition of the work first published in 1954. 8vo; original burgundy cloth, lettered in gilt on spine; pp. xii + 250, incl. index. Cloth very slightly mottled to backstrip; earlier owner's name signed on front free endpaper; starting at gutter between prelims. and main text; some foxing to edges and endpapers. Good condition. (Murphy & Goff, 1091 [1958 edition]) "I have incorporated in this work not only those expressions which are generally accepted as proverbs, but even some of those which may pass as idioms. ... The classification in this book is alphabetical. Besides this work, no attempt, to my knowledge, has been made to classify Zulu Proverbs. People who have collected proverbs have not followed any particular system of classification other than recording the proverb and, sometimes, the meaning as well. An attempt has now been made to classify these proverbs, not according to the alphabet, but according to the situation in which they are employed." .
