In 1871, thousands of hide hunters swarmed into the western Great Plains. Previously, herds of 60-75 million Buffalo had been diminished to about 40 million. Over the next 12 years, hunters had left only about 1000, taking the hides and leaving most of the meat to rot. This factual account is based on the accounts by hunters, by "sportsmen", and records of protests before Congress. There were battles between Native Nations peoples and the hunters, the former losing their sustenance and traditions.
