The first of five books in a series by the author "of sketches of village scenes and vividly drawn characters was based upon life in (the village of) Three Mile Cross" where she lived near Berkshire, England. Her Wikipedia biography describes "Her writing has all the charm of unaffected spontaneous humour, combined with quick wit and literary skill." Rubbed gray and brown marbled boards with leather corners and leather extended spine. Backstrip of spine is missing and has been replaced with paper strip with typed title which is peeling from front cover. Leather corners are worn and the embossed design on the leather cornes and spine is worn but still visable. Bumped corners. Marbling on outside pages. 292 surprisingly bright pages. Complete in original binding except for the gigantic map which is available in full size color thick glossy paper professional reproduction ($25 extra if desired). Pagination: 583 pages, 22 plates, 4 maps, all blanks present. Includes fascinating pencil diagram of oil rig on back of map. Oil rig drawing titled "Sheffield Oil Company. Warren(?), Co., Pa." That pencil drawing is the only interior writing or ownership marking anywhere in the book. Condition is a mixed bag. Original half leather marbled boards show heavy wear and looks like they were professionally rehinged in the distant past. Binding is sound. Pages show moderate to heavy toning and foxing. Ownership signature "Ric" and short note on the upper wrapper. Wrappers a little toned at the extremities, lightly rubbed, lower corner bumped, contents faintly toned. A very good copy. Offprint, presentation copy inscribed by the author on the upper wrapper, "Schrader, with kind regards of the author". Front board with quadruple ruled black borders, spine ruled in gilt. In the scarce original publshers dustwrapper with colour illustration mounted onto the front panel, below black lettering and four line border. Flaps and other panels lettered in black. Original printed price (15/-) on spine has been blacked out neatly. Aside from a couple of tiny chips to the wrapper this is a beautiful fine example of this well produced edition. 1709 Saint Francis Assisi Monastic Rule of Penance Lives of SAINTS + Piety RARE

In the 13th-century, devout followers of Saint Francis of Assisi formed the Third Order of Saint Francis. This order closely followed the preachings and examples set by Saint Francis who corresponded with these groups through letter. These letters ultimately developed into what would become the rules for penance in the Third Order.

This early 18th-century account of Third Order of Penance was collected and translated into French by Claude Frassen who included biographical sketches of the lives of saints of the Order along with prayers and liturgical texts. It also contains a printing of "Exercises of Piety" from 1703.
