Gagnon and Rath's Not Without Cause is the gripping ccount of how the David Peterson Liberals did not anticipate or prepare for the new trends emerging in Canada's electoral process: the increasing power of special-interest groups, campaign strategies that attack incumbents without offering alternatives, negative advertising, the critical importance of perceptions and the media, an electorate with declining party allegiances and the rise of non-traditional parties. It's also a tale of how Ontario's NDP and PC parties ran campaigns that became a perfect match for the volatile mood of voters.
