About This Item

1828. Ephemera. Two documents each on 9.5 x 7.75 inch paper, written on both sides. 1. Indenture March 26th, 1828, between Wm. Shaw and the Commissioners appointed by the General Assembly donating a certain tract of land containing twenty acres 'lying and situated in the Town lately known by the name of Madisonville in the County and State aforesaid for the purpose of erecting public buildings therein.' 2. Wm. Shaw and his wife, Honor Shaw, appear before John P, Thompson, Associate Justice for Madison County, Mississippi, on 27th March, 1828, to acknowledge that he (William) signed, sealed and delivered the deed of conveyance for the property. Further that Honor (his wife), being examined separately, acted freely in signing the conveyance. There follows a description of the plot lines, beginning at the southwest corner of said town Madisonville was a settlement on the stagecoach route on the Natchez Trace. It was the first Madison County seat in 1828 and had a race track, two banks and a wagon factory and at least one hotel. Both pages folded into thirds, and the paper is browned with age. There are closed tears at the folds and small edges chips, not affecting the text.
