New York: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1982. First edition. Fine. First printing of Alice Walker's breakaway success, a book centered around the experience of African-American women in the rural South. THE COLOR PURPLE is an epistolary novel about an African-American family in Georgia, following the fate of two sisters through their letters to each other. The book is particularly famous for the beauty of its language, which Walker shapes with astonishing perfection. Walker notably appreciated the design for the first edition dust jacket, remarking that the house "looks almost exactly like the church I attended as a child." A controversial winner of the Pulitzer Prize, the book remains a frequent target of censorship, despite its predominant themes of love and resilience. An American classic. 8.25 x 5.25''. Original quarter purple cloth with cream paper boards, silver-lettered spine. Original unclipped purple typographic dust jacket designed by Judith Kazdym Leeds. [8], 245, [1] pages. Ink ownership inscription on front pastedown, else fine.

Description:
Paris; New York: Robert Delpire; Universe Books, 1956. First US edition, 2nd edition overall. Long, narrow hardcover (10.5 x about 3.25 inches) with original mailing carton that has a window for the crocodile's snout to be visible. Some age-speckling to the white background, slightly darkened area consistent with the mailing box window, one inch tape repair to the bottom of the rear cover, good hinges, sound text block, clean pages with some minor age-toning to the first and last pages, no names or other markings. The mailing box has some old tape marks to the far end (tape has long ago fallen off), minor soil, French stamps but no postmark. Our guess is that the mailing box was never intended to be actually used to mail the book but was just there for effect. . Hard Cover. Very Good/Good Mailing Box. Narrow Oblong 8vo.

Description:
Three volumes, near fine; this book appears unused. Eminent 19th century medieval historian, patriot and activist Henry Charles Lea's famous and exhaustive compendium of materials concerning witchcraft from the writings of the early Hebrews down to 1547. A rather amazing collection of materials, both legal and historical, concerning the origin, development, traditions, influence, stages of belief and influence, and differences by region in the practice of witchcraft, magic and sorcery. Organized and edited from Lea's notes by Arthur Charles Howland, Professor of History at the University of Pennsylvania, who also verified Lea's citations. Inscribed gift of editor.
