The Roosevelt New Orleans "Do Not Disturb" Sign by Management - 1949

New Orleans: By the proprietors, 1949. Good. Volvelle, two beige, rectangular, die-cut, card stock sheets with rounded corners, a red circular piece between them, and a metal "clock hand," affixed to each other with 5 grommets; printed and ruled in black and green; 7 1/4 x 4 1/4 and 5 in diameter; a small chip to top edge and a few small spots to margins; 1-inch abrasion to upper margin obscuring several words; in good to very good condition.The Roosevelt New Orleans was originally built by German immigrant Louis Grunewald and opened its doors as The Hotel Grunewald in 1893, in anticipation of the 1894 Mardi Gras season. It was sold to a group of investors in 1923 and officially renamed the Roosevelt, in honor of President Theodore Roosevelt, whose efforts in building the Panama Canal had had significant financial benefits for New Orleans. The current sign, very elaborate and apparently specifically designed for the hotel ("patent applied for") could be alternately set to "Do Not Disturb Until" or "Put Room in Order By" by rotating the circular piece and setting the "hand" to a desired hour from 1 to 12. The sign also advertised the hotel's Sazerac Bar, home of the Sazerac Cocktail.
